Knitting Benefits Knitting is an activity, sometimes a survival mechanism shared by millions of men and women across the world, and it gains popularity. Besides the advantages of creating something usefull, you can also enjoy several benefits ; physical and psycological by doing this meticulous handcraft.

  1. Knitting allows you to steep yourself in creativity and forget the stress and anxiety of your day. Being actively engaged in a project about which you are passionate and interested, allows the brain to immerse itself fully in the task, producing a feeling similar to a runner’s high.
  2. The rhythmic motion of knitting has been proven to change the brain chemistry so as to decrease bad stress hormones and increase the release of such good mood hormones as serotonin and dopamine.
  3. The process of learning to knit helps you feel good about yourself and enhances your sense of self esteem. As you master more difficult stitches and patterns, you gain the confidence to try other new things in your life.
  4. Crafts like knitting engage both your mind and body, causing optimistic feelings about your life and future. Knitters also tend to be more social and outgoing, especially as they interact with others who share their passion.

That’s also why we choose «  ByWorldGranny» in Peru. Creation of those Knitting Clubs is a real plus for Grannies. They create income but also interaction, they create new relations and they share, and of course they have pleasure while knitting. The grannies who participated in the pilot are eager to continue with this project and after talking to our local partner, Villa Maria del Triunfo’s Municipality they are willing to help us organizing more knitting clubs and hope to extend this project to other municipalities in Lima. The Knitting Social Fabric project offers senior citizens in Peru the opportunity for social interaction and the possibility to earn an additional income. This intergenerational project fights isolation, promotes active ageing and doubles the income of the participating grannies. In fact, choosing needles over Netflix can do wonders to promote cognitive function as well as hand health, write Drs. Carrie and Alton Barron in their book “The Creativity Cure: Building Happiness With Your Own Two Hands. 2012” “When we are involved in creativity, we feel that we are living more fully than during the rest of life,” Csikszentmihalyi said during a TED talk in 2004. “You know that what you need to do is possible to do, even though difficult, and sense of time disappears. You forget yourself. You feel part of something larger.” Kniting is, over a passion and a pleasure that you share with other, provide several significant health benefits. Studies have found that the rythmic and repetitive action of knitting can : Help, prevent and manage : Stress ; Pain and depression. Which in turn strenghtens the body’s immune system. As well as create a relaxation response in the body which can decrease blood pressure, heart rate, help prevent illness, and have a calming effect.
